Unlike most allergy medications — which only treat symptoms — sublingual immunotherapy (allergy drops) treat the underlying causes of allergies. Allergy drops use the same FDA-approved antigens as allergy shots but deliver them in a liquid form under the tongue to highly specialized cells. Drops are given in gradually increasing doses, retraining the immune system to tolerate the allergen until the patient no longer reacts.
